Tour the most recent addition to The Nature Conservancy's Gila Riparian Preserve, the Iron Bridge Tract. This parcel lies just downstream from the old iron bridge and has an active floodplain. In the afternoon, visit TNC's Gila River Farm, where the floods of 2005 carved out a new main channel for the river. The focus of this tour will be on understanding how floods and other disturbances shape the river ecosystem. Meet at the Silver City Visitor Center at 9 a.m. to carpool, or arrive on-site at the Iron Bridge Tract by 9:45 a.m (includes carpool time). REGISTRATION REQUIRED

image What Greater Treasure? Living Water in the Desert -
Keynote Address by Thomas Lowe Fleischner, Ph.D.
7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Global Resource Center Auditorium,
(corner of 12th & Kentucky Streets)
Western New Mexico University, Silver City

In the desert, water appears when we least expect it and hides when we want it most. Rain falls but never reaches the ground, and dry washes abruptly become rivers. One constant holds true: water enables life. Join passionate naturalist Tom Fleischner for a vivid discussion of the role of water in our desert environment and a reminder that seasonal pulses are critical to a healthy Gila River.

Dr. Thomas Fleischner is a conservation biologist, author and educator who has worked in the environmental field for more than 25 years. Dr. Fleischner is a professor of environmental studies at Prescott College in Arizona, where he was key in the development of the school's degree track in Conservation Biology. He is the author of "Desert Wetlands" and has published numerous articles in journals such as Conservation Biology, Wild Earth, and Natural Resources Journal.

From the Mountains to the Desert: Flora and Fauna
of the Gila River Corridor in New Mexico
7:15 - 9:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Silco Theater, 311 N. Bullard, downtown Silver City
Presenters: Dr. Roland Shook; Dr. William Norris;
Dr. Randy Jennings; and Dr. Kelly Kindscher

Four biologists who have done extensive research on plants and wildlife in the Gila River Valley present their findings in an interactive slide and discussion program that will show how the biological richness of the Gila River benefits its inhabitants. This program may be the single most comprehensive and enlightening forum to date for learning about and appreciating the birds, mammals, herps and plants of the Gila River corridor. Effects of periodic flooding of the river will be emphasized.

Tables staffed by Gila Native Plant Society and Southwestern New Mexico Audubon Society board members will offer information about their organizations, and provide resources for further study about plants and wildlife in southwestern New Mexico.

A brief selection of Native American flute music, performed by Michael Kunz, will precede the formal program. Light refreshments will be available before and after the program. Come early to meet other Gila River and wildlife and native plant enthusiasts.
